SUMMARY:Weekly Online Support Group
DESCRIPTION:While we continue to monitor the developing effects of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic\, we would like to stay in communication as much as possible. For the time being\, we’ve decided to host weekly (virtual) support groups and will try to have a guest speaker each week. \nThis week we are excited to have Mr. John Bramblitt join us. John is an artist living in Denton Texas\, his art has been sold in over one hundred and twenty countries and he has appeared internationally in print\, TV and radio. Prior to his blindness\, John studied at the University of North Texas in Denton\, Texas\, where he graduated with honors. When Bramblitt lost the last of his vision in 2001 due to complications with epilepsy and Lyme’s disease\, his hopes of becoming a creative writing teacher were shattered and he sunk into a deep depression. He felt disconnected from family and friends\, alienated and alone. But then something amazing happened– he discovered painting. He learned to distinguish between different colored paints by feeling their textures with his fingers. He taught himself how to paint using raised lines to help him find his way around the canvas\, and through something called haptic visualization\, which enables him to “see” his subjects through touch. He now paints amazingly lifelike portraits of people he’s never seen–including his wife and son. Credit: https://bramblitt.com/ \nPlease join us via Zoom\, every Wednesday in April. We know several of you are not familiar with Zoom\, but it is fairly easy to use.  Please allow yourself plenty of time to join the meeting. SUMMARY:North Texas Giving Day!
DESCRIPTION:With the help for our community\, we are able to purchase Closed Circuit TVs (CCTV) and loan them out at no charge to help individuals with low vision regain their visual independence. \nThe majority of clients who need a CCTV are adults over the age of 60 living on a fixed income and simply cannot afford to buy one. By using a CCTV\, they are able to read their mail privately\, read the newspaper\, recipes\, books and any other form of print or written material. Some of the ladies even use their CCTVs to manicure their fingernails! \nCCTVs typically cost between $3\,500 and $4000 per unit\, depending upon the features and if the audible speech component (OCR) is included. \nPlease rally around this cause and help us purchase five new CCTVs with OCR totaling $20\,000. As long as we can continue helping people do what they’ve always done prior to their loss of vision\, then we’re giving them the priceless gift of INDEPENDENCE! \nAs Texans\, we know everything we do is bigger and better! What’s more fun than setting a Lighthouse record in generosity?! Help us reach our North Texas Giving Day goal of $20\,000 on Sept. 19th\, making 2019 our biggest and best year! \nDonate online at http://bit.ly/LFBFW
