For the time being\, we’ve decided to host weekly (virtual) support groups and will try to have a guest speaker each week. \nThis week\, May 6th\, we are excited to have Mr. Michael Hingson join us. Michael Hingson\, blind since birth\, went to college receiving a bachelor’s and master’s degree in Physics along with a secondary teaching credential from the University of California at Irvine.\nMichael then enjoyed a nearly-30-year career working for high tech companies spending most of his time in management roles. \nMichael Hingson’s life changed dramatically on September 11\, 2001 when he and his guide dog\, Roselle\, escaped from the 78th floor of Tower One in the World Trade Center moments before it collapsed. Soon after\, Michael and Roselle were thrust into the international limelight where Michael began to share his unique survival story and 9-11 lessons of trust\, courage\, heroism\, and teamwork. \nMike has served as The National Public Affairs Director for one of the largest Nonprofit organizations in the nation: Guide Dogs for the Blind; He serves as the vice president of the National Association of Guide Dog Users; Michael holds seats on other agency boards including the Fort Worth Lighthouse for the Blind\, the Earle Baum Center for the Blind  and the Colorado Center for the Blind; Michael is The National Ambassador for the Braille Literacy Campaign of the National Federation of the Blind. \nPlease join us via Zoom\, every Wednesday 10 AM to 12 PM. Neva has been with AFB since 2008 as the National Aging and Vision Loss Specialist. Neva has over 20 years of professional experience in the field of vision loss and a lifetime of experience living with low vision. She was diagnosed at an early age with Cone Rod Degeneration\, a rare genetic eye condition. Neva holds a bachelor’s in Rehabilitation Science and a master’s in Rehabilitation Counseling Psychology from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. Her expertise in adult learning and psychology paired with an extensive knowledge of applied solutions\, techniques\, and tools for adapting to low vision\, enables her to add valuable and practical insights in a variety of settings. \nWe are also excited to have Ms. Chelsea White from The Seeing Eye join us. Chelsea has worked for The Seeing Eye for 20 years as an Outreach Specialist and is a graduate from the program\, working with her fifth dog\, Brooke. She travels the United States and Canada educating people on dog guides and The Seeing Eye’s program. \nPlease join us via Zoom\, every Wednesday. DESCRIPTION:Lighthouse for the Blind of Fort Worth is hosting a Virtual Adjustment to Blindness Support Group!\n\n\n \n\n\nWhile we continue to monitor the developing effects of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic\, we would like to stay in communication as much as possible. For the time being\, we’ve decided to host weekly (virtual) support groups and will try to have a guest speaker each week.\n\n\n \n\n\nThis week\, April 22nd\, we are excited to have Mrs. Bettina Dolinsek join us. Bettina lives in Des Moines\, IA with her husband and two cats. She works for Nationwide Insurance as an administrative Assistant\, and has worked for nationwide for 5 years. Before working for Nationwide\, she worked as the Rehabilitation Wellness Specialist at the Lighthouse for the Blind of Fort Worth. Bettina has been certified as a L1 Cross Fit trainer\, and holds her certification in gymnastics. She has also been in the X-Ambassadors video for their song\, Renegades.\n\n\n \n\n\nWe are also excited to have Mr. Devin Gutierrez join us. Devin is a musician\, composer\, music producer\, arranger and computer geek. He is attending the Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired\, where he has done everything from a school musical to being an outspoken member of the student council.\n\n\n \n\n\nPlease join us via Zoom\, every Wednesday in April. For the time being\, we’ve decided to host weekly (virtual) support groups and will try to have a guest speaker each week. \nThis week we are excited to have Mr. John Bramblitt join us. John is an artist living in Denton Texas\, his art has been sold in over one hundred and twenty countries and he has appeared internationally in print\, TV and radio. Prior to his blindness\, John studied at the University of North Texas in Denton\, Texas\, where he graduated with honors. When Bramblitt lost the last of his vision in 2001 due to complications with epilepsy and Lyme’s disease\, his hopes of becoming a creative writing teacher were shattered and he sunk into a deep depression. He felt disconnected from family and friends\, alienated and alone. But then something amazing happened– he discovered painting. He learned to distinguish between different colored paints by feeling their textures with his fingers. He taught himself how to paint using raised lines to help him find his way around the canvas\, and through something called haptic visualization\, which enables him to “see” his subjects through touch.
