DESCRIPTION:Don’t be plain\, go Kustom Cane:\nWe are excited to have the founder of Kustom Canes join us for a quick presentation on Thursday\, July 16th at 12 PM.\nJames\, prior to losing his vision in 2010\, was the successful owner of Custom Effects\, with a reputation throughout the whole automotive restyling industry\, for being top notch in service\, sales\, installation\, an expert to his field. James serviced the mid south area from 1995 to 2010 and had his work recognized in national publications across the country. Shortly after losing his sight\, James noticed that there was no variation or style in mobility canes. There was white or white. Boring! Hence\, James transferred his experience from the automotive to the mobility! He designed his first cane in 2011. Lisa is the Diabetes Program Specialist at Texas Workforce Commission Vocational Rehabilitation.  She is a certified rehabilitation counselor and has been working with people with diabetes and disabilities for the past 10 years.  She has 25 years of experience in the diabetes education field. Lisa represents TWC on the Texas Diabetes Council and she participates in volunteer activities including serving as co-chair of the disability community of interest for the Association of Diabetes Care and Education Specialists. Lisa provides diabetes services to people with severe disabilities including individuals who are blind\, deaf-blind\, have mental illness\, intellectual and developmental disabilities.  She trains other diabetes education professionals on working with people with disabilities and advocates for the needs of people with disabilities to receive appropriate healthcare including diabetes services and access to technology and adaptations for self care. \nDate: May 27th \nTime: 10 AM – 12 PM \nTo register for this meeting\, email Rebecca at rsmith@lighthousefw.org.

Michael Hingson\, blind since birth\, went to college receiving a bachelor’s and master’s degree in Physics along with a secondary teaching credential from the University of California at Irvine.\nMichael then enjoyed a nearly-30-year career working for high tech companies spending most of his time in management roles. \nMichael Hingson’s life changed dramatically on September 11\, 2001 when he and his guide dog\, Roselle\, escaped from the 78th floor of Tower One in the World Trade Center moments before it collapsed. Soon after\, Michael and Roselle were thrust into the international limelight where Michael began to share his unique survival story and 9-11 lessons of trust\, courage\, heroism\, and teamwork. \nMike has served as The National Public Affairs Director for one of the largest Nonprofit organizations in the nation: Guide Dogs for the Blind; He serves as the vice president of the National Association of Guide Dog Users; Michael holds seats on other agency boards including the Fort Worth Lighthouse for the Blind\, the Earle Baum Center for the Blind  and the Colorado Center for the Blind; Michael is The National Ambassador for the Braille Literacy Campaign of the National Federation of the Blind. \nPlease join us via Zoom\, every Wednesday 10 AM to 12 PM.
