Programs

Information & Referral: Provides relevant assistance with obtaining services from federal, state or local agencies that are helpful to individuals with vision loss. Committed to providing meaningful advocacy, education and liaison services to blind individuals and their families.

Orientation & Mobility: Provides training in the skills necessary to travel safely and independently using a mobility cane, guide dog or other navigation aids. Instruction that enables the blind traveler to know where they are, learn where they wish to go, and plan on how to safely and independently get there.

Services for Seniors with Vision Loss:  This unique program will assist elderly individuals who are contending with declining eyesight and loss of independence. Through home visits, assessment of needs, and when possible input from family members, training may be provided in Adaptive Devices, Communication Techniques, Home & Personal Management, Counseling & Guidance and Community Resources.

Work Adjustment Training:  A practical assessment of individual’s vocational capabilities. A short-term placement in the Lighthouse Industrial Division will provide; feedback on work behaviors, productivity, interaction with supervisors and co-workers, ability to carry out instructions, and physical or mental limitations that might impact future vocational planning.

On-Job-Training: Provided to new employees in the Lighthouse Industrial Division so they may acquire specific job skills necessary for a successful vocational outcome.

Summer Employment for Teenagers: A 6-week summer work opportunity for blind teenagers to provide them with a realistic work experience and begin their understanding of demands they will be expected to meet in the workplace.

Employment in the Industrial Division:  The program of the Lighthouse in 1935 continues to be the core of our services. Employment of the legally and totally blind in a production faculty that produces a variety of products for sale to federal, state and commercial customers. An additional work component is Digital Data Scan that provides a document-imaging business service for local customers.

Special Children’s Activities: Coordinating with volunteers from the AT&T Pioneers, a headphone system is installed in Will Rogers Coliseum that enables sight-impaired children to hear and more fully participate in the Shrine Circus and Ft. Worth Rodeo.

Placement: Providing information and support to those blind individuals that seek vocational opportunities with community employers. Provide access to sources that provide help with job coaching or adaptive equipment needed to insure a successful placement.

Servmart:  The office supply store, operated by the Lighthouse, at the Navel Air Station/Joint Reserve Base/Fort Worth that supplies AbilityOne office products to Military personnel.
